World of Discoveries is an interactive museum and indoor theme park located in Porto, dedicated to the Age of Exploration, when Portuguese navigators set sail and changed the course of global history.
The museum takes you back to the “Golden Age of Discoveries”, a period between the 15th and 17th centuries, where Portugal embarked on several naval expeditions in search of new territories and sea trading routes. This fascinating space chronicles some of the pioneering explorations and conquests undertaken by Portuguese explorers.
We visited the World of Discoveries Porto and were swiftly immersed in the captivating history of Portugal’s trailblazing role during the age of exploration.
We were particularly intrigued by the expeditions of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in his quest to find a sea trading route from mainland Europe to India.
The themed areas in the museum, along with the impressive assemblage of interactive exhibits, were an unparalleled experience that left us with a lasting impression of Portugal’s influence in shaping the new world order. Using life-size sets, animated scenes, multimedia, and sounds, these exhibits are brought to life in a way that’s accessible and engaging for all ages.
Quick Historical Background
The Age of Discoveries — or Era dos Descobrimentos — marks one of the most pivotal chapters in world history, and Portugal was at its helm. Beginning in the early 15th century, this era saw Portuguese explorers venture into the unknown, crossing oceans in search of new trade routes, wealth, and knowledge. What they set in motion was nothing short of a global transformation.
Under the patronage of figures like Prince Henry the Navigator, Portugal became the first European nation to actively pursue maritime exploration. These efforts led to the discovery of the Madeira Islands, the Azores, and a sea route around Africa to India, most famously achieved by Vasco da Gama in 1498.
Soon, Portuguese ships were sailing to Brazil, Japan, China, and the African coasts, establishing a far-reaching maritime empire that shaped commerce, religion, and cultural exchange across continents.

The museum honors the courage and curiosity of these seafarers, and as a History Graduate, I do realize the impact of these discoveries and cultural transformation. It’s truly a portal into understanding how our interconnected world began to take shape, right from the shores of Portugal.
As a travel lover, I was mesmerized thinking how people traveled in those centuries, braving all odds (without social media, or modern science), just a call of adventure!
What to expect/ see at the World of Discoveries?
The exteriors of the museum are an absolute delight! You will walk into a ship and be welcomed by the front desk to redeem your online tickets.
Once in, you will be greeted with this sign!

The interactive galleries and exhibits at World of Discoveries consist of touchscreens, digital globes, replica instruments, maps, holograms, and multimedia walls, which allow you to dig deeper into:
- Navigation techniques – Learn how explorers used astrolabes, sextants, and star charts to steer across unknown oceans
- Shipbuilding – Discover what made the Portuguese caravels so revolutionary and seaworthy
- Trade and Commodities – See the global journey of spices, silks, gold, and other sought-after goods
- Life onboard a ship – Listen to sailor chants, and discover what daily life at sea really felt like
One of the themed spaces, Inventions, is dedicated to some of the pioneering inventions of different navigation instruments, along with their use to traverse through some of the uncharted waters.
Then you will see large globes, spices galore, and a real-life-size rhinoceros. Next, adjacent rooms showcase canons, wine barrels, exotic artifacts, etc.
All the fervour and excitement of setting sail into the unknown is perfectly captured in areas that are devoted to Shipyard – the heart of shipbuilding activities, Covering the Ship – furnishing the ship interiors for the lengthy voyages, and Lisbon – the gateway to expeditions across the globe.
What we especially appreciated is that everything here is multi-sensory and multilingual — available in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, making it accessible and inclusive. Children can engage with interactive quizzes and visual games, while adults will find layers of historical depth and reflection.
The Boat Tour: A Journey Through Continents
One of the most unforgettable parts of the World of Discoveries experience is the indoor boat ride — a gentle but vivid voyage that transports you across oceans and centuries. It’s like stepping into a life-sized storybook where history, culture, and adventure come alive through sets, sound effects, ambient lighting, and dramatic scenes that unfold as you glide through them.
The journey begins from the docks of 15th-century Portugal, with wooden caravels being readied for sea and explorers scanning maps under candlelight.
Visit the territorial waters of North Africa, a via point for Portuguese ships during their acclaimed voyages and the Dark Sea, where you will gain an understanding of the challenges faced by sailors during their travels.
As the boat drifts forward, you will pass the areas of West Africa – market scenes, golden deserts, and cultural richness are portrayed with color and movement. You can witness the struggles and unpredictable weather conditions that seafarers had to brave.
Next, you’re in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, complete with mist, exotic sounds, and real-life animals appearing through the foliage.
But nothing quite prepared me for the thrill of arriving in the Indian subcontinent. As the tropical heat rises (yes, the rooms are climate-controlled!), and the scent of spices seems to fill the air, I found myself face to face with a striking figure in traditional navigator’s garb.
“Vasco da Gama!” I whispered out loud with awe.
There he was — the man whose real-life voyage to India in 1498 opened up one of the most important trade routes in world history. The sets around him re-created a bustling Indian port, with elephants, temples, and rulers and merchants welcoming the Portuguese arrival.
The tour continues through China, Japan, and beyond, reflecting the full scope of Portugal’s global connections. Lastly, witness the arrival of Portuguese sailors in Brazil.
At every turn, there are surprises: talking parrots, flickering lanterns, jungle drums, and life-sized scenes that feel more theatrical than educational — yet they achieve both with ease.
This wooden boat ride was perfect to soak in the diverse experiences of Portuguese explorers sailing through different parts of the world. You don’t just learn history — you live it, floating through it with wide eyes and a sense of wonder.
It is very popular with adults and children alike, and an audio guide is provided for the duration of the ride.
Note that the museum usually gets a lot of school children during weekdays, and you might see a line-up to get to the boat. But trust us, it is worth it. Plus, you will be given a private boat for you/your family.

It’s located in the Miragaia district, just a short walk from the Ribeira waterfront (11-minute walk) and about 20 minutes from the Luis I Bridge. You can get there easily on foot, by tram, or by city bus.
The Miragaia district is beautiful. I stayed here on my solo trip to Porto and enjoyed views of the tram and the Douro River. There are lots of cool places to eat nearby as well!
