Situated across the Douro River from Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia is a cosmopolitan destination with a distinguished reputation built around its historic port wine lodges.
For centuries, these cellars have provided the ideal conditions for aging superior-quality port wine. As locals in Porto, we had the privilege of exploring several of these famed wine lodges, and we highly recommend visiting at least one during your time in the city.
Burmester Wine Cellars, as mentioned above, is located just across the Douro River from Porto (no hiking or climbing is necessary to get there).
The wine cellars are a short 2-minute walk from Gaia Riverside Promenade and a 15-minute walk from WOW Cultural District.

Burmester Wine Tasting Porto
Burmester offers several guided tours of its wine cellars at Largo Dom Luis I, right by the lower level of the Dom Luis I Bridge.
As you enter the cellar doors, you will see a check-in desk and a waiting area. There are exhibits and info boards for you to take a peek into the ancient wine caves of Burmester.
In the guided tour, you will discover time-honored winemaking traditions, from selecting the right grape varieties and the annual harvest (vindima) to the fermentation process and the aging of port wine in oak casks.
There you will learn all about Burmester’s estates in the Douro Valley, celebrated not only for producing exquisite port wines but also for preserving Portugal’s port wine heritage. Walk through the barrel room of this historic cellar where hundreds of oak casks are housed for aging Port Wine.
At the end of the wine cellar tour, you can sit down to indulge in some delicious Port Wine tasting. Burmester offers a few options for its in-house port tastings – from Fine White and Late Bottled Vintage to a selection of Tawny aged across different time spans.

- Classic Tasting: €18 Includes 2 Port tastings
- Premium Tasting: €22 Includes 3 Port tastings (Fine White, LBV & 10-year-old) paired with chocolates
- Exclusive Tasting: €25 Includes 3 Port tastings (Fine White, LBV & 20-year-old)
- Tawny Experience Tasting: €30 Includes 3 Port wines tastings (10-year-old Tawny, 20-year-old Tawny & 30-year-old Tawny)
We recommend a minimum of 3 Port tastings to get a well-rounded experience of Port – White, Ruby, and Tawny. And also pair it with some chocolates (like I did – it was amazing)!
Burmester’s in-house store features a wide variety of Douro Wines sourced from its vineyards in the valley. Before leaving, stop by the store and take home a bottle of port as a lasting reminder of your visit to Portugal!
