Porto, a vibrant global city is a cornucopia of architecturally rich historic sites and incredible vistas. To maximize your one day in Porto, we have hand picked some of the must-visit attractions and have also included walking distances between the sites to help you better plan your day. We recommend starting your day either at Sao Bento Train Station or Clerigos Church and Tower, depending on your choice of transportation to travel to Porto.
If you are planning to rent a car to get to Porto, we recommend starting your day at Clerigos Church and Tower which is in close proximity to a public car park (Parque de estacionamento). Located on Rua de São Filipe de Nery, this public car park is situated right across from Clerigos Church and Tower. We have used this car park and the location is extremely convenient to park your vehicle for the entire day as you explore Porto on foot. Additionally, this car park also has luggage lockers if needed.
However, if you are arriving in Porto via train or bus/coach for this day trip, we suggest starting your day at Sao Bento Train Station.
TravelTip: Campanhã Bus Station and Campanhã Train Station are located right next to each other, connected by an underground tunnel. After your arrival at Campanhã Train Station or Bus Station in Porto, you can take a direct train from Campanhã Train Station to Sao Bento Train Station to start your day close to some of the top tourist landmarks. The frequency of this direct train between Campanhã Train Station to Sao Bento Train Station is every 15 minutes and the travel time is around 5-7 minutes.
Whether you start your one day itinerary at Clerigos Church and Tower or Sao Bento Train Station, both these historic landmarks are a must see and are located in close proximity to one another.
- Sao Bento Train Station (Estação de Trem São Bento)
Sao Bento Train Station, a recognized UNESCO world heritage site and a National Monument is undoubtedly one of Portugal’s most alluring train stations. The imposing structure has extravagant stone sculptures of important happenings and prominent figures from Portugal’s past. The main hall of this station is decorated with Azulejo tiles, an enduring symbol of Portuguese heritage. As you set foot in the main hall of the train station, notice the distinctive blue and white painted ceramic tiles that decorate the walls of the entrance hall. A conglomeration of 20,000 plus blue and white azulejos tiles representing events from the country’s remarkable history adorn the walls of this train station.
PlanningTip: If you are looking for some quick breakfast and brew options after you arrive at Sao Bento Train Station, head to the TimeOut Market. Located in the south wing of Sao Bento Train Station, this market has 14 eateries and operating hours between 10am to 11pm.

- Clerigos Church and Tower (Igreja e Torre dos Clérigos)
The walking distance between Sao Bento Train Station and Clerigos Church and Tower is a short 7 minutes.
Clerigos Church and Tower, an 18th century masterpiece, was commissioned by the Brotherhood of Clerics and designed in baroque style by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni. The imposing Clerigos Tower stands at an impressive 75 meters high and overlooks the beautiful city of Porto. As you get closer to the complex, an elegant divided stairway leads to the entrance of the church. The church interior has a nave built in marble and granite complete with gilded woodcarving, a dome that bears the coat of arms of the Brotherhood of the Clérigos and 2 Iberian pipe organs. The complex also has a museum that contains an assemblage of precious paintings, furniture and sculptures amassed between 13th to 21st century.
Clerigos Tower, located behind the church, has 225 steps divided over 6 floors. If time permits, we strongly recommend climbing the 225 steps of Clérigos Tower to get to the top to appreciate some of the best panoramic views of Porto. This celebrated monument can be easily spotted from across the city and attracts thousands of visitors every year. If you happen to be in Porto during special events of the year like Easter or Christmas, the tower can be visited until late in the night.
Clerigos Church and Tower has a few cafes and restaurants around the complex to grab a quick bite or brew.

Porto City Hall and Liberty Square will be a quick walk by on our way to Bolhao Market from Clerigos Church and Tower.
Porto City Hall, designed by architect António Correia da Silva, was completed in 1955. The imposing structure has a 70 meters high central bell tower with a grand clock. In front of the city hall, there is a bronze statue of Almeida Garrett, a leading writer, orator and politician from the 19th century.
Liberty Square, one of Porto’s most important squares, is located across the Porto City Hall. This historic square is dominated by a bronze monument of King Peter IV, riding a horse in his military uniform and holding the constitutional charter in his right hand. This statue was erected in 1866 and the king’s posture was symbolic to his unrelenting commitment towards defending the constitutional values.

- Bolhao Market (Mercado do Bolhao)
The walking distance between Porto City Hall / Liberty Square and Bolhao Market is 6 minutes.
Situated in Porto city center, the beaux-arts style Bolhao Market is a prominent marketplace that spans an entire city block and has proudly served the locals for more than 175 years. Bolhao Market features around 80 indoor stalls, 38 outdoor shops, and 10 restaurants and is undisputedly one of Porto’s most recognized landmarks.
The market offers a variety of products like fresh produce, fish, meat, and poultry spices, nuts, cheese, coffee, and various baked delicacies along with Portuguese souvenirs like chocolates, fridge magnets, olive oil, canned sardines in colorful tins. As you wander through the aisles of the market, stop by stalls that also offer port wine in a glass accompanied by a few local favorites.

The walking distance between Bolhao Market and Santa Catarina Street is 2 minutes.
After visiting the vibrant Bolhao Market, continue your journey along Santa Catarina Street, Porto’s bustling shopping boulevard in the heart of the historic center. This energetic pedestrian avenue oozes with energy and charm, offering everything from local boutiques and global fashion to popular restaurants and cozy cafes. Along the way, pause to enjoy lively street performances or indulge in a bit of retail therapy at the trendy shopping centers La Vie and ViaCatarina, both conveniently located on Santa Catarina Street.
Stop for a few photos at the Chapel of Souls (Capela das Almas), a striking 18th-century landmark renowned for its magnificent blue-and-white azulejo-tiled facade, which beautifully illustrates scenes from the lives of saints.
As you stroll along the street, take a moment to visit the iconic Majestic Café, welcoming patrons since 1922 and a timeless gem that has been frequently hailed as one of the most beautiful cafes in the world.

- Batalha Square (Praça da Batalha)
The walking distance between Santa Catarina Street and Batalha square is 15 minutes.
Batalha Square is a quick walk by on our way to Porto Cathedral from Santa Catarina Street.
Around the 10th century, Batalha square was the site of an intense battle between the citizens of Porto and the Arabs of Almancor resulting in extensive destruction of the city. Today, Batalha Square circumscribes historic sites and structures of significance along with shops, restaurants and cafes.
As you walk by the square, admire the exterior facade of the baroque style Church of Saint Ildefonso (Igreja de Santo Ildefonso), decorated with the famed blue and white Azulejo tiles. As you walk to the center of the square, you will come across the Statue of D.Pedro V, former King of Portugal and Algraves. Sao Joao National Theatre and Batalha Cinema are the other historically important buildings in Batalha Square.

- Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto)
The walking distance between Batalha square and Porto Cathedral is 8 minutes.
The origins of Porto Cathedral, counted among one of the most important religious sites in Portugal, can be traced back to the 12th century. The cathedral is built on the uppermost part of Porto, resembles a fortress with battlements. This fortified cathedral, originally designed as a roman-gothic structure, went through a series of renovations in baroque style around the 17th century and upon completion rendered a unique blend of romanesque, gothic and baroque style of architecture.
As you step inside this complex, you will notice 2 square bell towers with domes and supporting buttresses, surrounding the cathedral. The cloister in this cathedral complex is divided between 2 floors and is beautifully embellished with the iconic blue and white azulejo tiles. Attached to the cloister is the Chapter House or Casa do Cabido that contains the cathedral’s prized treasures.

The walking distance between Porto Cathedral and Luis I Bridge is 4 minutes.
Dom Luis I Bridge is a majestic metal arch bridge that spans River Douro and connects the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Opened to the public in 1886, this iconic dual deck bridge was designed by Théophile Seyrig, former partner of Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris. The upper deck of the bridge is shared between Porto Metro and pedestrians while the lower deck carries regular vehicular traffic.
After exiting Porto Cathedral, a short walk of 4 minutes will take you to the upper level of the Dom Luis I Bridge. The upper level of this bridge presents outstanding vistas of River Douro flanked by the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia on each side.

- Wine Cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia (Caves de Vila Nova de Gaia)
The walking distance between the upper level of Dom Luis I Bridge and the Wine Cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia is 15 minutes.
Portugal, with centuries-old wine making traditions, is the undisputed world leader in the production of superior quality of port wine. The origin of this port wine is the Douro Valley, one of the most picturesque wine regions in the world. Douro Valley, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for rendering some of the most beautiful vistas of terraced vineyards along the slopes of valleys along the River Douro.
The port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia is a perfect place to learn about the history of port wine production and the journey of this “sweet nectar” from the slopes of Douro Valley to the cellars or caves of Vila Nova de Gaia. Vila Nova de Gaia, for centuries, is well known for hosting a number of port wine cellars and after spending the day exploring Porto, unwind at one of the port wine cellars located on Gaia Riverside Promenade to luxuriate in some port tasting while learning about the chronicle of port wine.

- Ribeira District (Distrito da Ribeira)
The walking distance between the Wine Cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia and Ribeira via the lower level of Dom Luis I Bridge is 15 minutes.
Ribeira, located along the banks of River Douro, is a charming neighborhood and one of the most beautiful districts in Porto. Ribeira, another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Porto, flaunts an exemplary setting of colourful building facades and beautiful winding medieval alleys along the banks of River Douro. This captivating neighborhood has a plethora of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes that offer some of the best views of the River Douro and the grand Luis I Bridge.
Ribeira Square (Praça da Ribeira), an integral part of this neighborhood, has served as a hub for trade and commerce since the middle ages. The square is home to 18th century St. John’s Fountain (Fonte de São João). This three storey high fountain structure bears the image of the coat-of-arms of Portugal.
Take a stroll along the river banks or step into one of the restaurants or cafes located along the river and absorb the lovely scenery as we will end our one day Porto itinerary.
