I had a great time learning about the history of azulejos and enjoyed a tile-painting workshop in the heart of Porto.

Why should you do a tile-making workshop in Porto?

The origins of Azulejo can be traced back to the era of Arab rule over the Iberian Peninsula. Azulejo, derived from the Arabic word “al-zulayj,” which translates to “small polished stones,” was introduced to Portugal around the 13th century and subsequently gained immense popularity across the country. 

Today, azulejo is prominently featured on the interior and exterior walls of numerous structures in Portugal.

What to expect in a Tile Painting Workshop: Porto

Tile Painting Workshop is a great way to learn and participate in a fun and creative activity. We participated in this 2-hour tile painting workshop and loved every bit of it. Our instructor was amazing and engaged in wonderful interactions about the history of azulejos. 

When we paid for the class, we received all the materials required for tile painting, like ceramic tile and acrylic paints. This workshop provided a unique opportunity to create beautiful designs on ceramic tile while indulging in some complimentary cocktails and relaxing background music. 

The workshop was very fluid, and the instructor had all the materials and seats ready for us. 

We were allowed to choose our subject for tile painting. Some of the participants chose flowers (in blue, and white, and some in yellows, greens, and blue), and some went for abstract/ geometrical shapes. 

We decided to include something nostalgic from the Portuguese Age of Discoveries history, and the instructor suggested a ship (very apt). 

Now, you don’t have to be an artist, because you will receive a print of the subject you are planning to paint on the tile. So, we received a small colored print of the ship, and I (Mayuri) started tracing it (stencil) on the blank tile. 

I also decided to keep the colors simple at blue and white. This part was tricky, and you must understand how the blues work in different hues and shades (I will leave this for the expert in the class when you attend the workshop). 

Once the outline was obvious on the tile, I started filling it with color – whites and blues. The process of using paints and color brushes is the same like you are painting on paper. 

You can take the entire 2 hours to finish the painting, and then leave the tile behind to be fired in kilns (furnaces). This is an important part of the tile painting process where tiles are fired in a furnace at high temperatures to solidify the material and create a durable product. 

You can pick up your tile the next day, and in some cases have it ready in as fast as 30 minutes!

This tile painting class takes place at the Boiler Studio, located on Rua dos Caldeireiros, in a very convenient location. The studio is a short 1-minute walk from the Clerigos Church and Tower and a 5-minute walk from the São Bento Train Station.

Most tile painting workshops are 2 hours long. All the materials will be provided by the school, and are instructor-led. Instructions are in English and Portuguese.

All the workshops and classes are beginner-friendly, and no prior experience is required. 

The class environment is warm and inviting. 

Typical tile painting class prices range from 38 euros to 66 euros per person in Porto. Most workshops will offer you complimentary drinks, and you will get to keep the tile as a souvenir. 

Just keep in mind that you have to leave your tile for some time (or a day) for it to be fired up, so plan for this activity, considering the rest of your Porto itinerary.
