1. Dom Luis I Bridge (Ponte de Dom Luís I)
The Dom Luis I Bridge, constructed in 1886, is one of the most admired landmarks in Porto. This dual-level, metal arch bridge spans the River Douro, connecting the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
The iconic bridge is a showstopper in Porto and occupies a very special place in everyone’s itinerary, and rightly so. Located over the River Douro, and by the vibrant promenade, Ribeira, it is one of the popular tourist attractions in the country.
Whilst the bridge is a great Instagrammable spot, the views from the bridge’s (upper and lower) levels are also equally breathtaking.
The upper level of the Dom Luis I is shared between pedestrians and the Porto Metro, offering stunning views of the River Douro flanked by Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia on either side of the river.
We suggest walking to the middle part of the upper level of the bridge to capture panoramic pictures of the Douro River with Porto neighborhoods and the wine cellars of Gaia in the background. The upper level of this bridge is usually busy with locals and tourists; however, be mindful of metro trains passing around you.
The lower level of the Dom Luis I Bridge is open to regular vehicular traffic along with sidewalks for pedestrians. The lower level also offers good views of the River Douro and colorful city quarters.
Getting to the Dom Luis I Bridge
Dom Luis I Bridge, located right next to Hill Garden in Vila Nova de Gaia, is a 5-minute walk from Porto Cathedral, 6 minutes walk from São Bento Train Station, 11 minutes walk from Clerigos Church Tower, and 13 minutes walk from Bolhao Market.

2. Monastery of Serra do Pilar (Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar)
The Monastery of Serra do Pilar, situated on a hill overlooking the Dom Luis I Bridge and Hill Garden, presents incredible vistas that are worthy of a perfect picture postcard! This 16th-century monastery, complete with a circular-shaped church and cloister, is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The large viewpoint area, also known as the Miradouro da Serra do Pilar, is a great spot to enjoy sweeping views of the River Douro, the Dom Luis I Bridge, and Porto.
If you are here in the evening, we suggest staying a little longer to watch the sunset, followed by the illumination of the Dom Luis I Bridge and the Ribeira District in Porto.

Getting to the Miradouro da Serra do Pilar
The Monastery of Serra do Pilar is located on Republic Avenue (Avenida da República) across from the Hill Garden in Vila Nova de Gaia. This monastery is a 5-minute walk from Hill Garden and Dom Luis I Bridge, a 20-minute walk from São Bento Train Station, a 23-minute walk from Clerigos Church Tower, and a 25-minute walk from Bolhao Market.

3. Clérigos tower (Torre dos Clérigos)
The Clerigos Tower, also known as the Torre dos Clérigos, is the tallest structure in Porto. It was built in the 18th century and stands at an imposing 75 meters high in the historic centre of Porto.
If you are visiting for religious reasons, the entry to the church is free. To reach the top of the Clerigos Tower, an entry fee is required. There are 6 floors in the church tower complex, and you will have to climb a total of 225 steps to get to the summit of the tower.
We absolutely, 1000% recommend taking the leap and climbing the 225 steps of the tower to soak in awe-inspiring 360-degree views of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
Keep in mind that the observation deck is a little narrow, and it can get claustrophobic for some people, but as long as you are careful and take short breaks along the way, you will be fine. Please make sure you wear comfortable (closed-toe) shoes.
The tower is open until 7 pm every day, but can also be visited until late at night during special events of the year, like Easter or Christmas. We also enjoyed the multimedia shows that Clerigoes Tower puts up every year, especially during the festive season.
Getting to Clerigos Tower
The Clerigos Tower can be easily spotted from across Porto and is located a short 7-minute walk from São Bento Station, a 10-minute walk from Porto City Hall, and a 13-minute walk from Bolhao Market.

4. Hill Garden (Jardim do Morro)
Instagram calls this Porto viewpoint the “epic spot to witness an amazing sunset”. And rightly so, locals and tourists gather here every evening to soak in the sunset over the Douro and warm hues over the colorful buildings of Porto.
Jardim do Morro is located adjacent to the upper level of the Dom Luis I Bridge. It prides itself on having an enviable location at the edge of the upper part of Gaia.
The garden is also a favorite gathering spot for locals during festivals. Within the garden complex, you’ll find a playground and an informal open-air theater often used by local artists. Its balconies offer breathtaking views over Porto and the Douro River.
Getting to Hill Garden
Hill Garden is situated in Vila Nova de Gaia, just a short 1-minute walk from the upper level of the Dom Luis I Bridge. It is located approximately an 11-minute walk from Porto Cathedral, 13 minutes walk from São Bento Train Station, 16 minutes walk from Clerigos Tower, and a 19-minute walk from Bolhao Market.

5. Gaia Riverside Promenade (Passeio Ribeirinho Gaia)
The Gaia Riverside Promenade is one of the top draws for tourists visiting Porto. It is said that the ‘best things about Gaia are its stunning views of Porto’.
And rightly so, as the promenade offers stunning views of the Ribeira District from across the River Douro.
Note that the promenade is situated in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the other side of the Porto Ribeira. Gaia is home to some of the famous port wine cellars as well as lovely restaurants, cafes, and street markets.
We regularly walk this beautiful promenade to soak in the exceptional views of the colourful buildings of Ribeira, Rabelo boats on the majestic River Douro, and the spectacular Dom Luis I Bridge.
The buildings in the Ribeira District and the Dom Luis I Bridge are beautifully lit at night, and we recommend visiting this promenade during and after sunset to capture stunning photographs.
Getting to Gaia Riverside Promenade
Gaia Riverside Promenade is located in Vila Nova de Gaia, a short 1-minute walk from the lower level of the Dom Luis I Bridge.
The promenade is also a 10-minute walk from the Ribeira District via the lower level of the Dom Luis I Bridge.
If you are on the upper level of the Dom Luis I Bridge or at the Hill Garden, you have the option of taking the stairs/path situated next to the Hill Garden. Following the narrow street that will steer you down to the Gaia Riverside Promenade, or you can take the Gaia CableCar (Teleférico de Gaia) that runs along the River Douro and links the Hill Garden to Gaia Pier (Cais de Gaia) located on the promenade.
The cable car ride spans a distance of 562 meters, and a one-way ride costs around €7 for adults and €3.50 for children (between the ages of 5 and 12 years).

6. WOW Cultural District
One of my favorite places to soak in the magic of Porto is the WOW Cultural District in Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s not just a spot with incredible views—it’s a whole experience.
Set on the hillside, the WOW Cultural District has a large open viewing area, including a generous praca. This viewpoint offers the most stunning panoramas of the Douro River, the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, and Porto’s charming red rooftops. You can wander through unique museums, sip wine on a sunny terrace, or just sit back and enjoy the view with a francesinha in hand (yes, they serve it here too!).
What I especially love is the vibe during festivals—there’s music in the air, people chatting over glasses of local wine, and the whole place feels alive. Whether you visit for a wine tasting, a cultural deep dive, or a relaxing evening with friends, WOW offers the perfect blend of Porto charm and unforgettable scenery.
Getting to WOW
The WOW Cultural District is super easy to get to—it’s located in Vila Nova de Gaia, just a short and scenic walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge from Porto’s vibrant Ribeira district. You can reach it on foot or hop on the metro and get off at either General Torres or Jardim do Morro stations.
From the Gaia Riverside Promenade, it’s just a 5-minute stroll. If you’re walking from the Dom Luís I Bridge, it takes around 15 minutes, or about 22 minutes from Ribeira Square if you take the lower level of the bridge.
Even landmarks like Clérigos Church and Tower are just a 30-minute walk away, making WOW the perfect cultural stop while exploring Porto and Gaia.

The complex is open for visitors to explore, for free. Museums and festivals have entry tickets and timed entries. Museums are open daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (last entry at 7:00 PM).
Tickets start at €20 per person (single museum ticket), and €44 for a Full Day WOW Pass.
7. Gaia Cable Car (Teleférico de Gaia)
Although not a Porto viewpoint, this recommendation will get you to observation decks, while welcoming you to amazing views of the River Douro and the cities of Porto and Gaia.
For breathtaking views, opt for the Gaia Cable Car. This cable car runs along the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, covering a distance of 562 meters as it connects the Hill Garden (one of our favorite viewpoints) to Gaia Pier. The journey time for a one-way trip is around 5 minutes, but the views from above are unquestionably phenomenal.
From the comfort of your seats, you can capture remarkable scenery as the cable car traverses the orange rooftops, winding alleys, and see some of the famed wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
Getting to the Gaia Cable Car
Gaia CableCar has its station located next to Hill Garden in Vila Nova de Gaia. The station is a short 1-minute walk from the upper level of the Dom Luis I Bridge.

A one-way ride costs around € 7 for adults and € 3.50 for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years.
8. Crystal Palace Gardens (Jardins do Palácio Cristal)
The Crystal Palace Gardens are one of the most beautiful green spaces in Porto. It is one of our personal favorites, too!
Located close to the city center, the Crystal Palace is a 19th-century landmark that was originally built to host exhibitions. Today, the palace has been transformed into an arena that hosts a variety of sporting and cultural events.
The Crystal Palace Gardens is home to wonderful fountains, water bodies, statues, beautiful landscaped gardens with pathways, and an impressive collection of exotic plants and trees. The garden terraces, with several viewpoints, present splendid views of the Porto quarters and the Douro River. Plus, it’s FREE!
Getting to Crystal Palace Gardens
Crystal Palace Gardens is a 19-minute walk from Clerigos Tower, a 24-minute walk from São Bento Train Station, and a 26-minute walk from Porto Cathedral and Ribeira Square.

9. Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto)
Porto Cathedral, situated on Penaventosa Hill, offers panoramic views over Porto old town and other neighborhoods. This 12th-century cathedral encompasses 2 bell towers, a beautiful cloister adorned with azulejos, and flaunts a blend of Romanesque, Baroque, and Gothic architectural styles.
The cathedral is one of the top-visited attractions in the city, and is a must-visit Instagrammable spot (for the blue tile cloisters). From the cathedral rooms, you can soak in the city views.
When I (Mayuri) visited Porto for the first time, I ended up walking up to the cathedral via the Terreiro da Sé Street. And this is the perfect place to capture the vibrant orange rooftops and just soak in the ambiance (before heading inside the cathedral).
As you approach the entrance of the cathedral, you’ll come across a spacious square, or praça, featuring a historic monument known as the Pelourinho do Porto. From this elevated square, resembling a scenic viewing platform, the panoramic views are truly captivating.
As the cathedral complex was built on an elevated part of Porto, the views of the city and the river from the cathedral square are surely incredible.
Note that access to the cathedral square is free. To visit the cathedral and Bishop’s Palace, there are entry fees (more on that below).

Ribeira Riverside Promenade, situated in the Ribeira District along the River Douro, is easily one of the most endearing neighborhoods in Porto.
Flanked by colourful buildings, charming eateries, winding cobblestone alleys on one side and the glorious River Douro on the other, Ribeira Riverside Promenade offers inspiring views of these sublime surroundings.
The promenade has innumerable spots for capturing the splendour of the Ribeira neighborhood, the River Douro, the Dom Luis I Bridge, and the Monastery of Serra do Pilar.
You can enjoy a lovely stroll along the banks, opt to sit down by a cafe with a drink, or just pause to soak in the breathtaking view of the bridge and the river views – it’s all available right in front of you!
Getting to Ribeira Riverside Promenade
Ribeira Riverside Promenade, situated along the riverbanks of the River Douro, is a short 2-minute walk from the lower level of the Dom Luis I Bridge.
It is a 10-minute walk from Porto Cathedral, 12 minutes walk from São Bento Train Station, 14 minutes walk from Clerigos Tower, and a 21-minute walk from Bolhao Market.

We have been on several cruises on the Douro, and each time, we found it to be very relaxing and wonderful.
On a cruise, you can take in the views of Porto and Gaia from the comfort of your seats. Operators in Porto offer various “Boat Cruise along Douro River” options that range from a 50-minute to a 2-hour boat trip.
The views of the historic quarters of Porto, the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, and the Dom Luis I Bridge from the deck of a boat are truly extraordinary. And we highly recommend it.
