The very first time I visited Portugal, I was traveling solo, and Porto completely stole my heart. I still remember standing along the Ribeira, mesmerized by the calm flow of the Douro River, the colorful facades stacked on the hillside, and the graceful arches of Porto’s famous bridges. One thing that caught my eye immediately? The traditional rabelo boats are cruising along the water. I knew I had to get on one.
So, I booked the iconic 6 Bridges Cruise Porto—and it was pure magic. Gliding under the city’s historic bridges, watching life unfold on both sides of the river, and feeling the rhythm of Porto from the water gave me a whole new perspective on the city. It was the perfect introduction to a place I would eventually fall so deeply in love with… I moved here!
Now living in Porto, I had the chance to relive that special experience—this time with my husband. And let me tell you, the 6 Bridges Cruise was just as enchanting the second time around.

A 50-minute 6 Bridges Cruise is 10000% worth it. It is great if you want to enjoy a relaxed ride on the Douro River, soaking in the beauty of the iconic bridges of Northern Portugal, and the colorful and vibrant buildings of Porto and Gaia.
The most affordable cruise is just 15 euros, and it packs an amazing value. And when in Porto, why not see the city in a unique way (from the water)? And take the route that wine merchants and their Rabelo Boats took.
This Porto cruise is also great for families traveling with kids (those aged 4 to 12 years pay half price, and those under 3 years old can travel for free). During my solo trip, I joined the cruise with school children, and everyone seemed to be having a great time!

Porto, located along the north-west coast of the Iberian Peninsula, is known for some of the most spectacular bridges in the world. The city also has one of the bridges, the Dom Luis I Bridge, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Porto has a total of 6 bridges spanning the River Douro while connecting the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Maria Pia Bridge, the first bridge constructed in Porto in 1877, was recognized as the longest single-arch bridge in the world.
Dom Luis I Bridge, one of the most photographed bridges in the world, was inaugurated 9 years after the opening of Maria Pia Bridge in 1886 and continues to be a major attraction for tourists visiting Porto.
My/Our Experience of the 6 Bridges Cruise (What to Expect)
So, we booked the same 6 Bridges cruise on both solo/ couple trips. Here is the tour we booked, and this is the most affordable option, and also the most FLEXIBLE!
The cruise is for 50 minutes, and the ticket serves as an open ticket, with a day validity.
The first time I was in Porto, I was late for my chosen time slot for the boat cruise, and I was rushing to get to the pier, only to realise the ticket was valid for the WHOLE DAY (which is great)!
Our cruise took off at the stated departure time, and the journeys take place – rain or shine!
It is important to note that the cruise has 2 meeting points – Ribeira Quay (Porto) and Gaia Quay (located across the River Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia), and can be embarked on either side (you can book the chosen quay when you are booking your reservation online).
Once again, remember your ticket is valid for 1 day, and this gives you the ability to choose your departure time during the operating hours of the service (and please don’t rush like I did, on my first trip).
This boat cruise has scheduled departures every hour with the first departure starting at 11 am to 6 pm (April to September) and 11 am to 4 pm (October to March).
Once you redeem your tickets, you will walk to board the boat. The one we booked had an open top deck and a covered seating area. We sat in the open deck area and took all the wonderful sights and pictures in!
Remember to carry a warm jacket or a scarf, in case you are cold (or if it rains on the day of your cruise).
So once on board, make yourself comfortable and enjoy the gentle breeze that slowly flows. The first bridge you will cross is the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge.
Make time to take in the views of the colorful buildings on the side of Porto, and say goodbye to the popular attraction in Gaia.
Next, you will pass under the Maria Pia Bridge. This railway bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel’s partner.
Very soon, you will see another railway bridge – São João Bridge. It forms a significant part of the Porto skyline.
You will see the Arrábida Bridge next. This is made of a concrete arch and is probably one of the bridges you would have used if you drove to Porto (like we do now). We saw 2 more bridges, namely Freixo Bridge, called the “periphery bridge”, and Infante Dom Henrique Bridge, which is the newest of the six bridges, built in 2003.

1. Maria Pia Bridge (Ponte de D. Maria Pia)
Built in 1877, the Maria Pia Bridge stretches over the River Douro and links the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Designed by renowned French engineer Gustave Eiffel, famous for designing the Eiffel Tower and the Garabit Viaduct in France, the bridge was built to connect the cities of Porto and Gaia via a rail link.
A recognized National Monument, this single-arch metal bridge served as a railway bridge for 114 years until its closure in 1991 due to the increased demands of present-day rail traffic.
At the time of its inauguration in 1877, the Maria Pia Bridge was the longest single-arch bridge in the world.
2. Dom Luis I Bridge (Ponte de Dom Luís I)
Dom Luis I Bridge, a metal arch dual-deck bridge, is undoubtedly one of the most iconic bridges in the world. Opened to the public in 1886, this bridge spans the River Douro and connects the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
The Dom Luis I Bridge was designed by Théophile Seyrig, a former partner of the designer of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Gustave Eiffel. The upper level of the bridge is shared between the Porto Metro and pedestrians, while the lower level is open to regular vehicular traffic.

3. Arrábida Bridge (Ponte da Arrábida)
Arrábida Bridge, inaugurated in 1963, is one of the important motorways in Portugal connecting Porto to Lisbon. This reinforced concrete arch bridge, with a length of around 493 meters, was the largest at the time of construction. Designed by Edgar Cardoso, the bridge spans the River Douro to unite the municipalities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
4. St John’s Bridge (Ponte de São João)
St John’s Bridge, designed by engineer Edgar Cardoso, was constructed in 1991 as a replacement for the aging Maria Pia Bridge. Similar to the Maria Pia Bridge, this new railway bridge connects the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
The bridge is built from reinforced concrete and is supported by 2 pillars planted in the river bed.
5. Freixo Bridge (Ponte do Freixo)
Freixo Bridge, inaugurated in 1995, was primarily constructed to ease the traffic congestion on the Dom Luis I Bridge and Arrábida Bridge. The bridge is a 2-way 8 8-lane motor bridge connecting Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia.
Freixo Bridge, designed by Daniel de Sousa and António Reis, continues to be a crucial motor link between the two cities.
6. Infante Dom Henrique Bridge (Ponte Infante Dom Henrique)
Infante Dom Henrique Bridge, built in 2003, is the newest of the 6 bridges in Porto. Designed by Adão da Fonseca, this 2-way 4 lane motor bridge was constructed as an alternative to the upper level of the Dom Luis I Bridge.
Today, while the Infante Dom Henrique Bridge serves as an important road connection between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, the upper level of the Dom Luis I Bridge has been converted to a metro line.

The only thing to consider for this boat cruise is the meeting point, which is a little away from the popular areas in Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia.

Our honest opinion regarding this “Boat Cruise with the Optional Wine Cellar Tour” option is to book these activities separately. If you upgrade your boat cruise ticket to include the optional “Wine Cellar Tour”, you will have to book a time slot directly with the wine cellar by reaching out on the phone number provided during the time of your booking.
While the boat cruise is approximately a 50-minute activity, the wine cellar tour is a separate activity of around 1 hour and involves you reserving your spot to participate in a guided tour of the wine cellar.

A boat cruise along the River Douro is a fantastic way to appreciate the charming landscapes of Porto neighborhoods, along with the historic wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
Some of the tour operators offer Douro River cruises in traditional Portuguese boats called “Rabelo Boat (Barco Rabelo)”, which for centuries, was used for transporting port wine from the vineyards of Douro Valley to the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
A final note:
It’s important to note that the 6 Bridges Cruise in Porto is quite different from the longer Douro Valley river cruises that depart from towns like Pinhão or Régua.
While the 6 Bridges Cruise is a short and scenic ride (usually around 50 minutes) that takes place right in the city, offering stunning views of Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, and its iconic bridges, the Douro Valley cruises are full-day or half-day excursions that take you deep into wine country. Those cruises meander through the vineyard-lined hills of the UNESCO-listed Douro Valley, often including wine tastings and meals onboard. You will have to block one full day to enjoy this experience intimately (along with transportation, etc)
Both are memorable in their ways, but serve very different purposes—one introduces you to the charm of Porto from the water, and the other immerses you in the tranquil beauty of Portugal’s most famous wine region.
