Is the Cockburn Winery Porto worth visiting? Corkburn Wine Cellar Tour Review
Cockburn Lodge is the largest wooden port cellar in Porto and boasts in excess of 200 years of rich winemaking tradition. Most of Cockburn’s premium port wines find their origins in the historic estate of Quinta dos Canais, situated in the heart of breathtaking Douro Valley. Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is also the world’s oldest demarcated wine region that provides ideal conditions for grape harvesting and production of some of the finest Portuguese wine. Today, Cockburn is an integral part of the Symington Family Estates, a distinguished winemaking family whose dedication to quality winemaking spans five generations!
We participated in a guided wine tour of the Cockburn Cellar and our experience was thoroughly incredible – from immersing ourselves in the captivating story of port wine to learning about the beginnings of wine making in Douro Valley to its aging process in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. The guided tour through the wine caves was a delightful experience, with memorable moments like getting an up-close look at thousands of oak barrels filled with maturing port wine and witnessing a cooper skillfully maintain the wooden barrels and vats.
Just across the Douro River from Porto lies the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, a vibrant city famous for its centuries-old port wine cellars. These cellars thrive under climatic conditions that are ideal in making the aging process of the port truly exceptional. During our time in Porto, we had the chance to explore some of its most renowned wine caves through guided tours and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone keen on savouring Portugal’s signature port wines.
Cockburn Winery Porto
Cockburn Wine Cellar is located on Rua de Serpa Pinto, a 20 minute walk from Dom Luís I Bridge and 15 minute walk from WOW Cultural District.
Embark on a guided tour through Cockburn’s centuries-old wine cellar and gain a first-hand insight into its extraordinary 200-year legacy of port winemaking, complete with a visit to the in-house museum that beautifully chronicles its amazing history. Along the way, watch the skilled coopers meticulously take apart each barrel, piece by piece, for maintenance before expertly putting them back together. We have visited numerous wine cellars in Gaia and there are few that offer a glimpse of a master cooper at work and Cockburn is certainly one of them!
Step inside the fortified granite walls of Cockburn’s Lodge, where in excess of 6,000 matured oak barrels of aging port rest alongside over 10,000 barrels stored in tones and vats. This expansive and invaluable collection forms the foundation for crafting Cockburn’s celebrated ports, including the iconic Special Reserve.
Finally, arrive at the tasting room and conclude your visit with a delightful port wine tasting, sampling Cockburn’s Classic, Premium or Vintage ports (depending on option selected). We found that combining the richness of port wine with the indulgence of fine chocolates is a delightful idea, and you can experience this pairing yourself with carefully selected chocolates like Cockburn’s Fine White paired with Passion fruit chocolate, Cockburn’s 20 Year paired with Yuzu cinnamon chocolate and Cockburn’s Quinta dos Canais Vintage paired with Raspberry chocolate.
At the end of this tour, stop by the Cockburn Store to purchase a bottle of your favorite port to carry home as a memorable Portuguese souvenir.
