This historic town is built within and around the majestic 12th-century castle that boasts imposing stone walls, several watchtowers, and offers picturesque vistas of the surrounding countryside.Óbidos offers visitors a glimpse into some of its unique traditions, including the famous cherry liqueur, Ginjinha d’Óbidos which is often served in chocolate cups. The Literary Village of Óbidos, a one-of-a-kind attraction in Portugal, is undoubtedly a book lover’s paradise, where historic spaces like wine cellar, church and market have been beautifully transformed into charming bookstores.
We have visited Óbidos a couple of times including a day trip from Lisbon and we can vouch for an incredible experience in this medieval town, situated just an hour away. It turned out to be an amazing day, where we had an extraordinary experience soaking in the medieval charm, exploring the rich cultural heritage, and indulging in tastings of the celebrated local drink – Ginjinha d’Óbidos!

How to get to Óbidos from Lisbon
Óbidos, situated in Central Portugal, is around 52 miles (85 kilometers) from Lisbon. There are 4 ways to experience Óbidos from the capital city, Lisbon – By CarRental, Private Tour, Bus/Coach and Train.
- Lisbon to Óbidos by Car Rental
For those seeking flexibility, renting a car is an excellent option for a day trip from Lisbon to Óbidos. The drive covers about 52 miles (85 kilometers) and takes roughly an hour via motorway A8 and Exit 15. Once in Óbidos, you will find several public car parks conveniently located just outside the historic city center. During one of our visits to Obidos, we opted to rent a car through Discover Car Rentals and took advantage of their competitive rates and comprehensive insurance options.
TravelTip: If you are driving from Lisbon to Óbidos, keep in mind that this motorway route includes tolls. To make things easier, most rental companies offer a Via Verde device, which lets you breeze through tolls with charges automatically added to your bill at the end of the trip.
- Lisbon to Óbidos in a Private Tour

- Lisbon to Óbidos in a Bus/Coach
Bus company Rodoviária do Oeste offers a number of daily connections, including express service, between Lisbon and Óbidos. Once in Óbidos, the bus stop is located just 100 meters from the historic center, making it a hassle-free option for exploring the town. Buses usually depart from Campo Grande Bus Station in Lisbon and will drop you right outside the town walls in Óbidos. For your return trip to Lisbon, buses will leave from the same spot outside the town walls.

- Lisbon to Óbidos by Train
Comboios de Portugal offers train service between Lisbon and Óbidos. For this day trip, we would not recommend using the train service between Lisbon and Óbidos, as there are fewer trains, the journey takes longer, and overall it is not the most convenient option. Óbidos Train Station is located around 0.62 miles (1 km) from the historic city centre.
What to do in Óbidos
A visit to the picturesque town of Óbidos would not be complete without visiting its most treasured medieval jewel – The Óbidos Castle. The origins of Óbidos Castle date back to the Roman era, later fortified under King Afonso Henriques, and today it stands as a treasure trove of history once graced by Portuguese royalty. Enclosed within the stone walls of the castle lies medieval charm, reflected in its imposing towers, sturdy corbels, grand courtyard, and beautiful gardens – a blend of military might and regal elegance. Today, visitors can experience a taste of royalty at the Óbidos Castle Inn (Pousada Castelo Óbidos), a luxury hotel nestled within the walls of the historic castle.
While visiting Óbidos Castle, take a walk along the ancient Town Walls and soak in panoramic views of the whitewashed houses with red-tiled rooftops, narrow cobbled streets lined with quaint shops, and the scenic countryside extending all the way to the Óbidos Lagoon!
Entry through the main gate of the castle is free and the hours of admission are usually between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm from May to September and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from October to April.
At the heart of the central square and the northern end of Rua Direita, stands the elegant Church of Santa Maria (Igreja de Santa Maria), a Roman Catholic landmark built in the 12th century and recognized as a Portuguese Property of Public Interest. This church features a remarkable blend of Renaissance, Baroque, Manueline, and Mannerist style of architecture. Step inside the church to admire its walls and ceilings richly decorated with the iconic blue and white azulejos, paintings by celebrated Portuguese artist Josefa de Óbidos and baroque altars from the 17th-century.
Wander down the cobbled Rua Direita, the town’s premier medieval street, lined with local shops, souvenir stores, cozy restaurants serving Portuguese delicacies, welcoming cafes, and ginjinha stalls offering the local cherry liqueur beverage served in small edible chocolate cups. Ginjinha, a signature drink of the town, is crafted by family-run wineries, and nearby farms, and you will find it served in almost every establishment across Óbidos.
If you happen to visit during summer time, be sure to stop by the Medieval Market of Óbidos, a vibrant annual festival that recreates the town’s medieval past with costumed performances, street celebrations, lively music, local arts and crafts, traditional food and knight tournaments!
Recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, Óbidos has embraced a framework dedicated to literary initiatives, transforming its historical structures into unique and inspiring bookstores. During our visit to Óbidos, we explored some of these bookshops, and we enthusiastically suggest adding them to your own itinerary.
At the end of Rua Direita is the Church of Santiago (Igreja de Santiago), which today is the popular bookstore Santiago Bookstore (Livraria Santiago). This bookstore opened its doors in 2012, when the Church of Santiago was converted into a bookstore that houses an exceptional assemblage of works representing Portuguese history and cultural heritage. Step inside Santiago Bookstore, set against the backdrop of the medieval church interior that includes stone walls and soaring arches. A short walk of 5 minutes from Santiago Bookstore on Rua Direita, is another literary gem – Market Bookstore (Livraria do Mercado), an interesting fusion of a fresh market and a bookstore! At the Market Bookstore, visitors can browse literary treasures while also picking up fresh produce and select grocery items, creating a truly unique shopping experience.
Alternate option to discover Óbidos during Christmas
