We have visited Cálem Wine Cellars a few times during our trips to Porto, and each visit has been an unforgettable experience. Through the guided tours, we learned about the phenomenal transformation of grapes from the vineyards of Douro Valley into Portugal’s most cherished export. Calem Wine Cellar Porto
Calem Caves is located on Avenida Diogo Leite in Vila Nova de Gaia. The caves are situated along River Douro and a short 4 minute walk from Dom Luís I Bridge and a 12 minute walk from Ribeira in Porto.
Our visit to Calem Wine Cellar began with a captivating introduction to the history of port wine and its origins in the breathtaking Douro Valley. We were instantaneously immersed in the journey of grapes from the picturesque vineyards to the caves in Vila Nova de Gaia encompassing the essential steps of harvesting, crushing, fermenting, aging and bottling. Discover the delicate balance of climate, soil, and time that gives port its distinctive richness and complexity along with the indispensable role of the cellars in maturing and aging this sweet nectar. As we traversed the cellar, we were amazed by the sight of hundreds of oak barrels, each holding large quantities of wine and years of craftsmanship and tradition.
This wine cellar tour culminated with the ultimate reward – sampling of premium ports in a tasting room that is adorned with the Calem’s expansive selection of port wine. As we sipped a range of ports, we could not help appreciating the incredible symphony of flavors, aromas and textures. Before heading out, stop by Calem’s in-house store and pick a few bottles as a Portuguese souvenir to bring home and relive the experience.

This alternative at Cálem, includes an interactive museum experience, a guided wine cellar tour, and premium port wine tastings paired with an intimate live Fado performance. Fado, dating back to the early 19th century, is a soulful traditional Portuguese music genre that seductively captures the emotions of longing, love, and nostalgia. Watching Fado while sipping some delicious port wine, for us, felt like a perfect harmony of culture and taste!
